Advanced IPv6 Training Course

This course is restricted to RIPE NCC members only.

Description

The Advanced IPv6 training course is a two-day course that covers IPv6 topics relevant to a network infrastructure. Topics include implementing IPv6 in routing protocols like OSPF or BGP, content delivery over IPv6, mobile networks, transition mechanisms or host configuration scenarios. Hands-on labs are also provided.

To attend this course, you must have participated in the "Basic IPv6 Training Course" or have followed the "IPv6 Fundamentals" e-learning course in the RIPE NCC Academy.

NOTE: If you have already deployed IPv6 on your network, this course may not be appropriate for you. Please read the pre-requisites, course content and goals before registering.

You should attend this training course if you are part of the staff of a Local Internet Registry (LIR) and if you:

  • Have basic knowledge of IPv6 and want to learn more about implementing IPv6 in a network infrastructure
  • Have been told you need to deploy IPv6
  • Have experience with IPv4 routing, OSPFv2 and BGP for IPv4
  • Want to learn more about IPv6 transition mechanisms

Pre-requisites

It is assumed you are familiar with IPv4 and IPv6 (Basic IPv6 course level) networking, basic networking concepts and protocols (OSPF, BGP), (for the labs) CLI and command line tools.

Course content

DAY 1:

  1. Introduction
  2. IPv6 Routing Basics
    • Exercise: Enable IPv6
  3. OSPFv3
    • Exercise: Configuring OSPFv3
  4. BGP
    • Exercise: Configuring BGP
  5. Content
  6. Mobile Providers

DAY 2:

  1. Transition Mechanisms
    • Exercise: NAT64/DNS64
  2. Host Configuration
    • Exercise: SLAAC
  3. DHCPv6
    • Exercise: DHCPv6
  4. Security
  5. IP Address Management Systems

The course doesn't cover:

IS-IS, EIGRP and RIP
IPv6 for End Users
How to operate a Local Internet Registry (LIR)
IPv6 basic knowledge
IPv6 Security in depth

Goals

  • Identify what the differences are between IPv6 and IPv4 regarding routing protocols

  • Learn how to implement OSPFv3 and BGP in an IPv6 network

  • Understand the aspects of IPv6 that differ from IPv4, especially regarding host configuration, SLAAC and DHCPv6

  • Recognise the existing solutions to provide a smooth transition to IPv6

  • Acquire a general understanding of the major issues with IPv6 regarding security and IP address management

  • Configure IPv6 with OSPF and BGP in a test network
